Charm Temple Mendut





Mendut is a temple which is located at the east of a straight line triad of temples ( Borobudur , Pawon , Mendut ) . The temple was founded by the Sailendra dynasty and Buddhist religious background , where it is indicated by the shape of the stupa as many as 48 pieces in the top.not known exactly when this temple was founded . But a Dutch archeology mention that the inscriptions found in the village Karangtengah 824M bertarikh stated that king Indra has built a shrine called venunavayang means bamboo forests . If this is true then surely Mendut founded in the 8th century AD.
                                                                                          
          On the inside of this temple there is a room that contains the altar where three statues of Buddha stands . Three statues are starting from the far left is the Bodhisattva Vajravani , Sakyamuni Buddha and Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara . All three statues of Buddha are still in good condition , some flowers and incense appear lying underneath . An iron fence was built at the front of the statue to avoid excessive visitor interaction / no interest in this third Buddha statue .

          Reliefs found on the walls of this temple is still clearly visible shape / engraving . Relief contains a story in the form of moral teachings using animal figures ( fable ) as characters. There is a story "Brahmin and Crab " , " Goose and Turtles " , " Two Birds Betet Different " and " Dharmabuddhi and Dustabuddhi " , which summarizes the content of the story is as follows

          " Brahmins and Kepeting " : Tells the story of a Brahmin who saved a crab for later this crab return the favor by saving way brahmins of interference crows and snakes .

" Goose and Turtles " : Tells the story of a tortoise who flew two geese to the new lake . Because emotion in responding to the words for what they are doing , turtle let go so that it falls to the ground and eventually die .

          " Two Birds Betet Different " : Tells the parrot behavior of two very different because it only raised by Brahmins and the other by a highwayman .

          " Dharmabuddhi and Dustabuddhi " : Two different friends who have a behavior which Dustabuddhi reprehensible nature Dharmabuddhi alleges misconduct , but ultimately his crime was uncovered and Dustabudhi – sentenced.





Chronologically , Mendut discovered in 1836. Then in renovations in 1897 and 1904, on the body of the temple , but the results are less satisfactory . In 1908 restored by Dutch archaeologists until the peak can be rearranged . In 1925 a number of stupas which have been trimmed , fitted and rearranged . The overall building area is 13,7x13,7 meters with a height of 26.4 meters .
                                           
          Mendut a Buddhist temple be founded by King Indra the first king of the dynasty Sailendra dynasty pda 824 M , this means Mendut built earlier than Borobudur temple founded by King Samaratungga , Wangsa dynasty in 850 AD

          Mendut temple is located in the village of the District Mendut Perhaps , Magelang , about 8 km before the temple of Borobudur . Mendut 26.4 meters high , facing southwest , have the 48 small stupas and found relief decoration on the body of the temple in the form of Kalpataru tree .

          Reflief - reliefs contained pad temple walls is still clearly visible . This relief in the form of a story containing moral teachings dngan using animal figures as characters. There are other stories ntara Brahmins and crab , geese and turtles , Two Birds Betet and Dharmabuddhi and Dustabuddhi .

          Mendut is the initial location of the ritual process of Vesak , followed by taking holy water from Bannerman Jumprit , Parakan , Temanggung , as well as the sacred fire of Merapen , Grobogan . Vesak ceremony is the culmination ceremony Pradaksina the ceremony surrounding the Borobudur temple level by level dilaksakan in Borobudur right at Purnama Sidhi or the first full moon in May. Vesak celebrations or rituals can be seen by the public.



          In 1834 Mendut began to receive attention despite suffering the same fate as other temples , which is in a state of collapse and disintegrate . Hartman, a president Kedu when it began to notice Mendut . In 1897 carried out the preparations for restoration . From the year 1901-1907 J.L.A. Brandes went one step further and trying to restore Mendut and then in 1908 followed by Van Erp albeit unsuccessfully complete overhaul .
         
J.G. de Casparis found Mendut constructed to honor ancestors Sailendra . The main chamber of the temple there are three statues that experts say these statues were identified as Cakyamuni flanked by Bodhisattvas , Lokeswara and Bajrapani . In the book Sang Hyang Kamahayanikan noted that supreme reality ( advaya ) manifests itself in three gods ( Jina ), namely : Cakyamuni , Lokesvara , and Bajrapani .

          As temples are Budhistist , reliefs on temple Mendut also contains moral teachings stories that are usually in the form of stories of animals sourced from Pancatantra of India . The stories include a tortoise which was flown by two geese and described below beberpa anal shepherd as if to mock turtle . Therefore turtles emotional in response to taunts , then terlepaslah bite of wooden handle held so drop dead. The core story is the teaching about the nature of arrogance that would harm themselves.

          Mendut located 3 km east of the temple of Borobudur , or 1.5 km to the north of Pawon . When you to Borobudur temple must have passed by looking at the board heading into Mendut . From the highway you can already see its existence
